Union Settee
Oak, ash, eastern white pine, milk paint

Rooted in the continuous arm Windsor tradition, The Union Settee is formed by joining two chairs built entirely by hand from the log using traditional methods. The original chair forms remain intact and fully functional, while the steam-bent arms are pushed to their material limits to create a seamless, serpentine connection at the front. A shared stretcher links the two undercarriages, introducing an undulating line that moves between the chairs without disturbing their individual structures. The pieces meet lightly at the crests and at the tips of the back legs, touching by only a quarter inch, allowing the forms to remain distinct while clearly connected. Though it reads as a settee, the seats remain separate—comfortable for one or two bodies—expressing a union that feels grown from the original form rather than added onto it.
