Strap Carved Vessel

Maple - 24” x 25” x 2”

This vessel adapts a 17th-century strap carving technique—traditionally used to ornament flat furniture panels—onto a curved, asymmetrical form. The carving, done entirely by hand, follows the contours of the piece, creating a seamless interplay between surface and structure. From a distance, the pattern appears precise and uniform. Up close, subtle irregularities emerge: shifts in texture, rhythm, and symmetry that reveal the hand at work.

Rooted in a form of decoration that once embraced human variation out of necessity, Strap Carved Vessel brings those imperfections forward as choice. The result is a quiet tension—between decoration and form, repetition and intuition, tradition and reinterpretation—where it’s no longer clear which came first: the carving or the vessel that holds it.
