A Partially Draped Cabinet

Solid mahogany, bent laminated bars, hand enameled glass, brass hardware
50” x 18” x 48”

A simplified Chippendale cabinet built in the diminutive scale used for “women’s” furniture. While traditional Roman imagery included the full figure, in this piece the caryatid expands so the scale of the figure’s body matches the size of the piece - conflating the physicality of the draped figures with the object they are decorating. The positioning of the imagery transforms the cabinet carcass into a bodily interior so by opening the cabinet as intended, we violate the figures by removing their coverings. The object combines iconic decorative motifs with a functional cabinet form to explore female objectification, domestic labor, and sexuality.
