The Crush Tree was a community art installation in Gambier, OH that attempted to visualize the invisible connections between people living there. Hundreds of notes were written by people living in the small town of Gambier, OH. The notes described specific feelings they had for or about other people also living in the same small town. Notes could describe any relationship in any way however they were not allowed to contain names or easily identifiable physical descriptions. The purpose was not to confess secrets but to remind a small town of its own internal life and to create a new awareness of the hilarious, tragic, irrational, and often unspoken connections that drive its everyday actions.
